Before the end of the half the Chiefs did allow the Jets to get a touchdown, but the offense answered right back and got another touchdown before the end of the half to have a 11 point lead at halftime. On their first drive of the second half the Chiefs added another field goal to get the lead back to 14 points and that is where the game would finish 24-10. With the win the Chiefs move in to a four way tie for the last wildcard sport in the AFC at 5-3.
Alex Smith ended the day 21 of 31 for two touchdowns (both to tight ends, still not touchdown passes to a wide receive) and no interceptions and 199 yards. If these are the stats of a game manager when his team is cruising to a win, I will take them any day. Charles ended up with 20 carriers for 78 yards and a touchdown along with two catches for 10 yards. Not great numbers, but in a game you are winning limiting Charles to 22 touches is really good. Halfway through the season and Charles looks very healthy still. Bowe had six catches for 55 while Kelce added four catches for 67 yards and a touchdown.
The defense allowed 255 yards through the air and 139 on the ground while protecting the lead. Mauga who came over after playing for the Jets the last three years lead the team with 10 tackles. Houston added to his NFL leading sack total by getting two more and is up to 12 on the season and is still on pace to break the NFL single season sack total, and get a huge payday at the end of this year.
We are half way through the NFL season and here are some stats on this team:
Offense:
- Averaging 25 points per game - #12 in the NFL
- Averaging 201.1 passing yards a game - #29 in the NFL
- Averaging 136.9 rushing yards a game - #6 in the NFL
- Overall averaging 338 yards a game - #21 in the NFL
Defense:
- Giving up 17.3 points per game - #2 in the NFL
- Averaging 199.4 passing yards a game - #1 in the NFL
- Averaging 116.1 rushing yards a game - #19 in the NFL
- Overall averaging 315.5 yards a game - #5 in the NFL
- Still have not given up a rushing touchdown, the only team in the NFL to do so.
The only concerning stat on this team is that they are -2 in turnovers, giving the ball up 7 times and only getting 5 takeaways. However when you are 5-3 that can be over looked and if the Chiefs can start getting some turnovers they could be really dangerous.
So this team is not playing Marty Ball, but in a way they are, just more attractive. This team runs the ball really well, hits the short passes and controls the ball and is in the top half of the league in scoring. On defense they have one of the defenses in the league with a dangerous pass rush and play makers on the field, just think if they would not have lost Johnson for the year in the first game.
If the Chiefs can keep this up and make the playoffs they are a team that is built to do well in the playoffs. They may actually get their first playoff win in 20+ years. The upcoming game against Buffalo, who is also at 5-3 will have a huge impact on the Chiefs playoff chances.
