While the game may not have started great for the Chiefs, the outcome was definitely a great one. Anytime you can win by 10 points in the NFL it is a solid win, if you win my 20 that is a blowout, so a 27 point win is a great and easy win.
Let's start with the defense. Maybe they weren't awake, maybe they under estimated the Rams or maybe the Rams threw some new looks to them for the first drive, but the Chiefs let them march down the field 65 yards in 6 plays for an easy touchdown on the first drive. Whatever the reason the Chiefs D quickly figured it out, fixed the issue and dominated the Rams for the rest of the game not allowing another point. Including pushing them back far enough after a Charles fumble leaving the Rams in the red zone that they missed the field goal. On the first drive of the game the Chiefs gave up 10.8 yards per play, the remainder of the game the Chiefs only gave up 135 yards on 45 plays making that 3.0 yards per play. The defense was lead by Justin Houston with 3 sacks, putting him up to 10 on the season.
With a slim 10-7 lead at half time Knile Davis put the game under control on the first play of the second half by having a 99 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. This play gave the momentum to the Chiefs and the defense would not let the Rams get it back.
The offense started slow and you have to give credit to the Rams defense and coaches for that. The Chiefs wanted to establish a run game and the Rams were selling out to stop the run game. It was not until late in to the second half that the Chiefs finally decided to take what the Rams were giving them and pass more. Once they did they were able to find the end zone. Once the Chiefs started using the passing game the running game opened up as well. The Chiefs put the game away early in the 4th quarter with back to back Charles and Davis touchdowns.
Alex Smith had a very good game passing without throwing a touchdown pass, he went 24 of 28 for 226 yards and did not turn the ball over. A stat line like this from Smith most weeks will lead to a Chiefs win. Jamaal Charles had a good day rushing as well with 73 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, he also added 4 catches for 44 yards giving him 117 all purpose yards. Davis on top of his kickoff return had 16 carriers for 49 yards with a rushing touchdown as well. Dwayne Bowe also showed up for the Chiefs with 6 catches for 64 yards (and no big drops that I can remember).
This win moves the Chiefs to 4-3 on the season and back in to playoff contention. Up next are the 1-6 New York Jets at home.
