Hats off to both the Royals and Giants on a great series and a drama packed Game 7. The Giants and one in particular one player played better for 4 games and won their third title in five years. However the Royals have nothing to be ashamed of, they had a great season and an amazing post season, it is hard right now because they were so close.
Thanks to the FOX broadcast I will not be using a certain players name in this post, I will just call him The Player. This is no disrespect to this player or the Giants, however from the 6th inning on last night FOX forgot that there were other players on the field and even as other players for the Giants were getting hits, or defensive players were made by the Royals this player sitting on the bench is all that was talked about. Yes this pitcher is a very good pitcher and had an amazing and record setting World Series, but the gushing by FOX was comical by the end of the game.
The energy in Kansas City leading up to this game. While I was not a the game in person I have never heard the stadium louder on television. The Royals fan base has been amazing this post season and as someone posted on twitter "This what 29 years do".
Guthrie started off the game strong getting the Giants to go 1-2-3 in the first. Off of a walk the Royals tired to get something started in the first but Homser struck out with Aoki on second. In the second the Giants got a rally started after Sandoval lowered his elbow in to a pitch. The next two Giants got hits and then on two sacrifice fly's San Francisco scratch across two runs. The Royals did what they needed to do in the bottom of the second. With Butler leading off with a single and then scoring on a Gordon double. Next was a scary moment for all Royals fans as Perez took a fast ball right above the knee on leg, I am sure he has a huge bruise there today. With good base running by Gordon he was able to get to third on a Moustakas fly ball and then score on an Infante sacrifice fly. After Escobar singled they Royals knocked Hudson out of the game. However Affeldt came in and closed out the inning for a 2-2 score after 2 innings.
What turned out to be the game deciding inning, the Giants led off the fourth with Sandoval again who got an infield singled and Infante lost his footing on the grass after making a great play to get to the ball and could not make the throw to first with enough power on it. Pence then singled and Sandoval was able to more to third on a Belt fly out. Ned made the right move at this point and brought Herrera in to the game. However Morse was able to get a broken bat single in to right field that scored Sandoval. Herrera got out of the inning with no more damage and the Giants only leading 3-2.
After this pitching took over. Affeldt after hitting Gordon got a double play and only faced 4 batters in the 4th. Herrera got the Giants 1-2-3 in the 5th. The Giants at this point brought in The Pitcher in the bottom of the fifth. For the Royals Herrera pitched the fifth and sixth and only up two hits in the sixth and was aided with a double play. Davis pitched the seventh and eighth and only gave up one double in the eighth inning. Holland came in and got the Giants in order in the ninth.
So all the Royals had to do is get one run to tie the game on a pitcher who had just thrown a complete game shutout on 115 pitches two days earlier. However in his 4 previous World Series starts he had only given up one run total. The Pitcher continued his dominance, through two outs in the ninth he had given up 1 hit and struck out four. Then Gordon found the gap in left center field and ended up at third with two out. Up to bat the hero of the Wild Card game Perez and the only player to ever score on The Pitcher in the World Series. However the Royals hope of a dramatic comeback ended on a foul pop-up to third base.
The MVP of these series was The Pitcher who was responsible for 3 of the 4 wins which the Giants got. I know there is more than one player on a team, but the Royals were able to hit all the other pitchers the Giants threw their way. In this series The Pitcher threw 21 innings, gave up 1 run on 9 hits with 17 strikeouts and walked 1 batter.
